ศิลปะพระพุทธรูปพม่า สมัยฌาน (Shan Period)
พระพุทธรูปฌาน นิยมสร้างกันมากในคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 17 ช่วงที่ รัฐฉาน ( Shan state ) กำลังเรืองอำนาจและได้แผ่ขยายอาณาจักร, ศิลปะ และ วัฒนธรรม ไปอย่างกว้างขวาง ซึ่งในยุคนั้นหากเปรียบเทียบก็คือช่วงสมัยอยุธยาของเรา พระพุทธรูปนี้มีศิลปะและเอกลักษณ์โดดเด่นเฉพาะตัวที่ไม่เหมือนกับพระพุทธรูปสมัยอื่น เช่น
- พระเกศา เป็นแบบจุกดอกบัวตูม - พระพักตร์ กลมเหมือนพระพักตร์เด็ก - พระวรกาย อวบอ้วนเจ้าเนื้อ - พระองคุลี ปลายพระองคุลีเสมอกัน
พระพุทธรูปที่ยังคงหลงเหลือให้เราได้พบเห็นกันอยู่ทุกวันนี้ส่วนใหญ่จะทำด้วยทองสัมฤทธิ์, หินทรายแกะสลัก หรือไม้สักที่ลงรักปิดทองคำเอาไว้
เสน่ห์ของพระพุทธรูปในยุคสมัยนี้อยู่ตรงที่หน้าพระพุทธรูปจะเหมือนเด็กน่ารัก ซึ่งทำให้ผู้ที่เก็บสะสมไว้ ทุกครั้งที่เห็นพระองค์นี้จะรู้สึกมีความสุขและสบายใจอย่างบอกไม่ถูก ซึ่งนี่อาจจะเป็นจิตวิทยาอย่างหนึ่งที่ผู้สร้างในสมัยนั้น พยายามที่จะสร้างลักษณนี้เพื่อให้ผู้ที่มากราบไหว้บูชาได้รับความสุขกลับไป คล้ายคลึงกับพระสังฆจาย ที่บางครั้งฝรั่งเรียกว่า happy buddha พระพุทธรูปสมัยฌานนี้ก็มีความ happy แบบนั้นเช่นกัน แต่อย่างไรก็ตามพระพุทธรูปก็ยังต้องอยู่ในภาพที่สำรวมไม่สามารถแสดงท่าทีที่ดูแล้วมีความสุข สนุกสนานเกินไปได้ ลักษณะโดยรวมจึงออกมาเหมือนดั่งที่เห็น คือคล้ายๆเด็กน่ารักดูเจ้าเนื้อ ที่เวลาใครๆเห็นแล้วรู้สึกมีความสุข แต่ก็ยังสงบนิ่งมีความสุขทุกครั้งที่ได้พบเห็น

The era comparable to Thailand’s Ayudhaya era obtained a distinct characteristics of Budda image art as following, - Hair of a Lotus shape - Child-like round face - Plump figure - Equal length fingertips
Such Buddha images which can still be seen nowadays were made of bronze, carved sandstone or gilded teak.
The charm of Buddha image of this era was its child-like adorable facial feature, giving collector a sense of joy and comfort. This could perhaps be its creator’s psychological technique at the time in purpose to give back joy to those came to worship. The approach of which was similar to that of Katyayana image nicknamed the “Happy Buddha”. Shan era Buddha image also portray such joy. However, as a respectable Buddha image, the poses would not lean too much towards the joyful side, hence the showing design result, a likable baby face with plump figure which overall radiated happiness along with a calming serene sight.
