รู้หรือไม่ว่าหลักการออกแบบให้พอดีกับการใช้งานในสัดส่วนของมนุษย์ (Human Scale) ที่ใช้กันอยู่ในปัจจุบัน ถูกเผยแพร่และใช้กันมายาวนานตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ.1948 แล้ว ในชื่อว่า ”Le Modulor” โดยผู้ที่ได้รับการขนาดนามว่าเป็นเจ้าพ่อแห่งสถาปัตยกรรมยุคใหม่ ที่สถาปนิกแทบทุกคนต้องรู้จักอย่าง “Le Corbusier”

Le Corbusier (เลอกอร์บูซีเย) หรือ Charles-Édouard Jeanneret คือสถาปนิกชื่อก้องโลกชาวสวิส-ฝรั่งเศส ที่ฝากผลงานไว้มากมายจนถูกขึ้นบัญชีมรดกโลกมากถึง 17 ผลงาน โดยในวัย 20 ปีเขาได้เดินทางไปทั่วยุโรกลางและแถบเมดิเตอร์เรเนียนเป็นเวลา 3 ปี เพื่อศึกษางานสถาปัตยกรรมต่าง ๆ ด้วยตัวเอง และรวบรวมองค์ความรู้ต่าง ๆ เช่นการไปเยือนแถบทัสคัน ทำให้เกิดเป็นแนวคิด Individual Living Cell หรือห้องที่มีไว้เพื่ออยู่อาศัยส่วนตัว กรีกและอิตาลี่ก็ทำให้เขาได้เรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับเรื่องสัดส่วนความสวยงามแบบคลาสสิค ส่วนแถบเมดิเตอร์เรเนียนทำให้เรียนรู้เรื่องการใช้แสงธรรมชาติ รูปฟอร์มเรขาคณิต และงานแลนด์สเคปที่ทำหน้าที่เป็นแบ็คกราวด์ให้กับงานสถาปัตยกรรม กระทั่งเกิดเป็นสไตล์การออกแบบของตัวเองขึ้นมาอย่างชัดเจน ซึ่งภายหลังฝากผลงานเอาไว้มากมายจนถูกใช้เป็นพื้นฐานบทเรียนการวิเคราะห์ฟังก์ชันของนักเรียนสถาปัตย์ในปัจจุบัน

แน่นอนว่าผลงานสถาปัตยกรรมที่ได้รับการยอมรับไปทั่วโลกก็ต้องมีหลักการในการออกแบบ และหลักการของเขาเองก็สามารถแบ่งออกได้เป็น 2 ประเภท นั่นก็คือบัญญัติในการออกแบบ 5 ประการ (Five Points of Architecture) และ “Le Modulor” หรือก็คือหลักการออกแบบที่สอดคล้องกับสัดส่วนมนุษย์ (Human Scale) ซึ่งพัฒนามาจากการค้นพบสัดส่วนทางคณิตศาสตร์ในร่างกายมนุษย์ของ Leon Battista Albeti จนกลายมาเป็นวิธีการออกแบบที่รวมเอาการวัดในระบบเมตริกเข้ากับแบบอารยธรรมแองโกลแซกซอน หรือก็คือภาพโมดู
ลอร์แมนที่ใครหลายคนคุ้นตานั่นเอง แรกเริ่มเดิมทีแล้วโมดูลอร์แมนมีความสูงเท่ากับ 175 ซ.ม. หรือมาตรฐานความสูงของชายชาวฝรั่งเศส แต่ต่อมาถูกเปลี่ยนเป็น 183 ซ.ม. ในปี 1946 เนื่องจากค่านิยมที่ชายหน้าตาดีจะต้องตัวสูงเสมอ และเมื่อนำไปรวมกับแขนที่ยกขึ้นมาแล้วโมดูเลอร์แมนจะมีความสูงเท่ากับ 226 ซ.ม.

หลังจากนั้นหลักการ Le Modulor ก็ถูกใช้ในการออกแบบกันอย่างแพร่หลาย จนนับได้ว่าเป็นการเปลี่ยนเข้าสู่ยุคสมัย Modern เลยก็ว่าได้ เพราะไม่เพียงแค่จะถูกนำไปใช้กับการออกแบบสถาปัตยกรรมเท่านั้น แต่ Le Corbusier ยังนำ Le Modulor ไปใช้ออกแบบเฟอร์นิเจอร์อีกหลายต่อหลายชิ้น ซึ่งควรค่ากับคำว่า “ความสวยงามแบบสากล” อย่างแท้จริง

Established and globally adopted since 1948, “Le Modulor” dimension was developed by a proclaimed pioneer of modern architecture whose name was well known to every architectural practitioner, “Le Corbusier”.

Le Corbusier or Charles-Édouard Jeanneret was a Swiss-French architect, over 17 project of whose works were inscribed in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In his 20s, Le Corbusier traveled Central Europe and the Mediterranean for 3 years visiting architectural sites on his self-study exploration journey, gathering knowledges that would exhibit later in his career. For example, his idea of Individual Living Cell or a room for a person to live in individually, was developed from visiting the Tuscan area. His time in Greece and Italy helped him learn about the classic proportional beauty, while the Mediterranean had him learnt about the use of natural light, geometric forms, including Landscape Design which played significant role as a background for architectural works. These accumulative experiences had later shaped into Le Corbusier’s distinct design identity. His numerous projects became a fundamental lesson of functional analysis for architects of later generations.

There is no doubt that a mutual principal was required in order for architecture to be globally accepted. For Le Corbusier, his principals were sorted out into 2 aspects, “Five Points of Architecture” and “Le Modulor”, or the method of carrying out a design corresponding to human scale. Developed from Leon Battista Albeti’s discovery of mathematical proportion within human body, a visual bridge between the metric systems and Anglo-Saxon derived measurement was established, resulting as the renowned Modulor Man. Originally Modulor Man’s height equaled to 175 cm regarding the standard height of French men, but were adjusted to 183 cm in 1946 due to the shifted social standard that associated masculine beauty to height. When combined with a raised arm, the Modulor Man’s total height would equal to 226 cm.

From then on, Le Modulor principal was widely adopted that it marked the modern age of architecture as the measurement didn’t only benefited in architecture but Le Corbusier also applied the system in his numerous furniture design projects which therefore, truly characterized by the term “Universal Beauty”.
