These days,”wristwatch” was undeniably one of our daily life essentials. Besides telling time, a watch was also a reflection of it’s owner’s personality, hiding clues in its selection with endless details behind. Starting from the mechanism, the tiny but precisely running gears, the function of collecting its owner’s physical and environmental data, all the way to its assembly, its material, the beauty of the dial with delicate and thoughtful design. These traits all combined as factors to the selection of one’s favorite watch.
When talked about one of the top premium watch as well as a legend that changed the watchmaking history, winning the public affections until today, “Rolex” was the answer. The fuse between the material of eternal value like gold and the iconic design inherited from the maker of the world’s first water proof “Oyster” watch, Han Wilsdorf. In the system of which, the bezel was screwed into the case, together with winding crown consisted of over 10 pieces of components in order to form a water resistance system equivalent to those of the submarine gate. The bezel and watch glass were design to fit perfectly into the case and airtight sealed to protect the inside mechanism. Rolex also invented the Perpetual Movements, a complex genius system that allowed its own movement to pause and self-wind automatically just by wearing. Power reservation from the tiny mechanic with chronometric precision was protected by shockproof components. These perfect combination between steadfast performance and excellent design had made Rolex Oyster a legend in watchmaking history and a milestone leading to today’s wristwatch industry.
In 1910, Rolex became the first wristwatch in the world to receive the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision, granted by the Official Watch Rating Centre. In the following 1913 it patented the Perpetual Movement system, the world’s first self-winding mechanic. The mechanic of which had become the heart of every automatic watch we see today.
The interrelation between invention of high performance and intricate, thoughtful design had become the heart of Rolex. The practice wasn’t aiming towards the creation of one watch but to establish a standard for every watch from then on, with highest delicacy in every piece in pursuit of perfection.
