ชิโนโปรตุกีสเป็นศิลปะที่ผสมผสานรูปแบบของชาวโปรตุเกสและชาวจีนและมลายูเข้าด้วยกันตั้งแต่ยุคจักรวรรดินิยมตะวันตก สามารถพบได้ตาม มะละกา ปีนัง สิงค์โปร มาเก๊า และขยายเข้ามาในไทยช่วงปี พ.ศ.2444 ซึ่งตรงกับสมัยของรัชกาลที่ 5 โดยคำว่า Sino (ชิโน) แปลว่าจีน ส่วน Portuguese หมายถึงชาวโปรตุเกสนั่นเอง

นอกจากนี้ศิลปะสไตล์ชิโนโปรตุกีส ยังหลอมรวมเข้ากับวิถีชีวิตของคนในพื้นที่อย่างกลมกลืน ตัวอย่างที่เห็นได้อย่างชัดเจนคือเมืองภูเก็ตที่ยังคงมีสภาพสมบูรณ์อยู่ และด้วยเสน่ห์ความสวยงามที่ยากจะปฏิเสธทำให้ ชิโนโปรตุกีสยังถูกอนุรักษ์และเป็นแรงบันดาลใจในการออกแบบให้กับดีไซน์เนอร์ในทุกยุคทุกสมัยจนถึงปัจจุบัน

Many may have heard of Sino-Portuguese style of art. But do you know where it originated and why it lasted until these very present days, applied into various works of design and blended seamlessly into the modern world?

Sino-Portuguese was an art style resulted from Portuguese, Chinese and Malay culture fused together during the western colonialism era. Initially apparent across Melaka, Penang, Singapore and Macau, the style entered Thailand in 1901 during the reign of King Rama V. The word Sino referred to China, combined with Portuguese.

The Sino-Portuguese style of art also seamlessly blended into the life of the locals. Examples were seen in Phuket downtown where the architect still remained in great condition. Thanks to its undeniable beauty, Sino-Portuguese art was preserved and continued to inspire designers of younger generations up until today.
