อีกหนึ่งผลงานเฟอร์นิเจอร์ของเอแกลที่ได้รับการตอบรับที่ดีมากเลยทีเดียว หลายคนเห็นแล้วอาจจะรู้สึกคุ้นๆ คับคล้ายคับคลาเหมือนจะเป็นตั่ง หรือเป็นธรรมมาสน์ก็ไม่เชิง ซึ่งนั่นก็มากันถูกทางแล้ว เพราะนักออกแบบของเราได้ใส่กิมมิคของวัฒนธรรมไทยหลอมรวมกัน ออกมาเป็นโซฟาไทยตัวนี้นั่นเอง วันนี้เอแกลขอมาเล่าที่มาของการดีไซน์เจ้าโซฟาไทยตัวนี้กัน
โซฟาไทยตัวนี้ ออกแบบโดยยึดเอาวัฒนธรรมไทยในอดีต ที่เจ้าขุนมูลนายชอบนั่งบนตั่ง
เรานำตั่งแอนทีคเดิมที่มีเอกลักษณ์ มีขาคู้ของสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ตอนต้น มาผสานกับลักษณะของธรรมาสน์ ซึ่งจากเดิมธรรมมาสน์มีแผงกั้น 3 ด้าน แต่เราประยุกต์จากที่แผงจะมีลายแกะสลักเยอะๆ เราเปลี่ยนเป็นลูกกลึงเข้าไปแทน เพื่อดีไซน์ที่ดูเรียบง่าย แต่ยังคงมีความร่วมสมัยอย่างมีเอกลักษณ์ และนำหมอนขวาน (หมอนขิต หรือ หมอนสามเหลี่ยม) มาวางล๊อคเข้าตำแหน่งไว้ ทำให้ผู้นั่งสามารถนั่งเต็มตัว และก็ยังเอียงไปพิงหมอนสามเหลี่ยมสบายๆได้
หากเราศึกษาลงไปในวัฒนธรรมไทย ย้อนหลังไปในอดีต เราไม่เคยมี "เก้าอี้" มาก่อน คนไทยเราส่วนใหญ่จะใช้ลักษณะของการนั่งพื้น แคร่ หรือ ตั่ง เท่านั้น เจ้าไทยโซฟาตัวนี้ จึงดีไซน์ให้มีลักษณะเตี้ย เพื่อให้ผู้ใช้สามารถขึ้นไปนั่งขัดสมาธิได้เต็มตัวไม่เหมือนนั่งเก้าอี้
และถ้ามองไปที่วัฒนธรรมจีน ทางจีนตั้งแต่ยุคสมัยราชวงศ์ถัง หมิง หรือ ชิง ล้วนแล้วแต่มีเก้าอี้นั่งทั้งนั้น แต่เช่นกัน เป็นเพียงเจ้าขุนมูลนายที่จะมีสิทธินั่งบนเก้าอี้ ในขณะที่ประชาชนทั่วไปก็นั่งพื้น ในไทยเราเองก็เช่นกัน เพียงแต่เราไม่มีเก้าอี้สำหรับเจ้าขุนมูลนาย แต่เรามี ‘ตั่ง’ ซึ่งแสดงฐานะและลำดับขั้นที่แตกต่างออกไป และนั่นก็เป็นข้อมูลทั้งหมดที่เราศึกษาเพื่อใช้ในการออกแบบ ‘โซฟาไทย’ ชิ้นนี้
Re-imagining Thai traditional daybed to a stylish comfort
This furniture piece from Agal that was adored by many might evoke some familiar senses to the room. Did it remind you of Thai daybed? Or a Buddhist pulpit? You’re on the right track because our designer proudly fused together glimpses of Thai traditional pieces into this “Thai Sofa”.
This Thai Sofa was designed based on a historical day bed on which Thai noble men used to sit. We took Inspiration from an antique daybed from early Rattanakosin era distinguishable by its unique curved legs, blended with some characteristics of a Buddhist pulpit with surrounding panels on its 3 sides. Aiming for a more simple design but preserving the contemporary appeal, we replaced complex wooden lacework with spindles. Traditional triangle shaped pillow was also added to the design placing in the determined position allowing user to either sit straight, or comfortably lean to the side on the pillow.
Looking back, Thailand had never adopted the use of a “chair” before in our historical eras. Our daily routine was familiar to sitting on the floor, a daybed or a bamboo bench. To recreate such sensation, unlike usual chairs, this Thai Sofa was designed with less height so that you can easily sit in it with your legs crossed.
On the other hand, the use of chairs appeared throughout Chinese history either Tang, Ming or Qing dynasty. However, only elites were able to sit on chairs whereas commoners had to sit on the floor. Likewise, in Thai history, ornate daybed or “Tang” signified the person’s wealth as well as his social status. And that was our deep research in creating this Thai Sofa.
