พระพุทธเจ้าเสด็จลงจากสวรรค์ชั้นดาวดึงส์

พระพุทธเจ้าที่เราคุ้นเคยกันอยู่ในทุกวันนี้ คือพระโคตมพุทธเจ้า หรือพระนามเดิมคือเจ้าชายสิทธัตถะ เชื่อกันว่าเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าองค์ที่ 4 ในภัทรกัปนี้ โดยมีตำนานกล่าวว่า ครั้งหนึ่งพระพุทธเจ้าเสด็จขึ้นไปจำพรรษาบนสววรค์ชั้นดาวดึงส์ ในพรรษาที่ 7 นับตั้งแต่ตรัสรู้ เพื่อแสดงธรรมโปรดพุทธมารดา หรือพระนางสิริมหามายา ที่เมื่อสิ้นพระชนม์แล้วจึงบังเกิดที่สวรรค์ชั้นดุสิต

โดยเมื่อพระพุทธเจ้าเสด็จขึ้นไปยังสวรรค์ชั้นดาวดึงส์แล้ว ก็ทรงประทับจำพรรษที่โคนต้นปาริฉัตรหรือต้นไม้สวรรค์ เมื่อพระอินทร์ทรงทราบว่าพระพุทธเจ้าเสด็จมาจำพรรษา ก็ป่าวพระประกาศให้เหล่าทวยเทพเทวดาในสรวงสวรรค์ให้มาร่วมชุมนุม เพื่อฟังธรรมพระพุทธเจ้า เมื่อเทพเจ้าทั้งปวงทราบก็เกิดโสมนัสพิศวง ต่างร้องเรียกต่อกันไปเรื่อย ๆ จนถึงหมื่นจักรวาล แม้แต่พระนางสิริมหามายาพุทธมารดาที่อยู่ในสวรรค์ชั้นดุสิตก็เสด็จลงมาฟังธรรมพุทธเจ้าด้วย พระพุทธเจ้าจึงทรงแสดงอภิธรรมโปรดพุทธมารดาตลอดพรรษา จนพระพุทธมารดาบรรลุโสดาปัตติผลในที่สุด

ภายหลังที่พระพุทธเจ้าเสด็จจำพรรษาที่สวรรค์ชั้นดาวดึงส์เพื่อแสดงธรรมแล้ว จึงเสด็จลงมาด้วยบันไดแก้ว บันไดทอง บันไดเงิน ที่พระอินทร์เนรมิตรขึ้นมาเพื่อลงมายังเมืองสังกัสนครในวันออกพรรษา โดยพระบาทแรกที่เหยียบลงมาบนพื้นโลกนั้น ต่อมาได้เป็นหนึ่งในสถานที่ระลึกที่คนไทยเรียกกันว่า “รอยพระพุทธบาท” และเมื่อชาวเมืองทราบข่าวก็พากันมาทำบุญตักบาตรพระพุทธองค์ที่นั่น ซึ่งเป็นที่กล่าวกันว่าเกิดเหตุการณ์อัศจรรย์ขึ้น คือ เทวดา มนุษย์ และสัตว์นรก ต่างมองเห็นกันและกัน จึงเรียกวันนี้ว่าเป็น ”วันพระเจ้าเปิดโลก”

ภาพนี้คือจิตรกรรมฝาผนัง ชื่อว่า “พระพุทธเจ้าเสด็จลงจากสวรรค์ชั้นดาวดึงส์” ณ พระที่นั่งพุทไธสวรรย์ ที่ AGAL เล็งเห็นถึงความสำคัญของงานศิลปะเก่าแก่ที่ควรอนุรักษ์ไว้ไม่ให้สูญหายไปตามกาลเวลา จึงได้คัดลอกจิตรกรรมฝาผนังชิ้นนี้ขึ้นมาอย่างปราณีต ใช้ทั้งเทคนิคการตัดเส้น ลงสี และโฉบสี โดยพยายามคงรายละเอียดตามแบบต้นฉบับไว้ให้ได้มากที่สุด

The Decent of Lord Buddha from Trāyastriṃśa Heaven
.
Lord Buddha whose name had always been familiar to us was in fact, “Gautama Buddha” or in his given birth name “Prince Siddhattha” believed to be the 4th of celestial Buddhas within the “Bhadda-Kalpa” (aeon,in Buddhist cosmology, in which the five Buddhas are born). Legend has it that once upon a time, Lord Buddha paid his visit to stayed in Trāyastriṃśa heaven in the 7th Vassa (three lunar-month period) after his enlightenment in order to give preachings to the his birth mother, Queen Siri Mahamaya, after whose death, was reborn in Tusita heaven.

Arrived upon Trāyastriṃśa heaven, Lord Buddha was described to rest under the Parijaat (Gandamba) tree or the tree of heaven. Lord Indra who had heard about his visit, announced for all the deities to gather and hear the Lord Buddha’s teachings, the news of which caused the euphoric celestial beings to disseminate it throughout ten thousand realms, including Tusita heaven where Queen Maya was in. Consequently, the former queen traveled down to hear his teachings too. Lord Buddha therefore, continued his Dharma preaching throughout the entire Vassa period which eventually brought Queen Maya to reach the Sotāpanna stage of enlightenment.

Upon his return after staying in Trāyastriṃśa heaven granting his preachings, Lord Buddha descended to earth walking on jewel ladder, golden ladder and silver ladder conjured by Lord Indra and arrived in Sankissa City on the last day of Vassa. The first footstep of his descent later became a sacred location recognized among Thais as “Buddhapada”. Aware of his arrival, the multitudes gathered to give their faithful offerings. It was upon that day when a clear view of deities, humans and beings of hell were miraculously presence to each other, the event of which later called “The Day of Disclosure between Realms”.

This image was the mural painting named “The Decent of Lord Buddha from Trāyastriṃśa heaven” originally located at Phutthaisawan Throne Hall. AGAL valued such immemorial piece of art worthy of preservation against the change of time. We therefore carefully and delicately reproduced this piece using Thai traditional techniques of outlining, coloring and gradient coloring with highest attempt to maintain the original detail as precise as possible.
